All New Trek Madone 6.9

The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team kicked off the first stage of the 59th Dauphine Libere aboard the all-new, 2008 Madone 6.9, marking the first time the new bike has graced the pro peloton. Even though many of the Discovery Channel riders have been surreptitiously riding the new bike for quite some time now, the Dauphine marks the official team transition from the previous Madone to the all-new fuselage.

Nearly two years in the making, the all-new Madone represents the largest allocation of design and development resources Trek has ever devoted to a single product. After all, delivering the team a new bike better than the one Lance used to win his final three Tours is no mean feat. To give the Discovery Channel Team the absolute best handling, best performing bike in the peloton, Trek engineers threw out all the usual conventions limiting frame design. Instead, they focused on creating a superior ride with superior performance. Freed from constraint, the result is an all-new Madone with a 90mm wide bottom bracket (the industry’s widest), a tapered E2™ steer tube that’s stronger and lighter than traditional systems, headset and bottom bracket bearings that nest directly in Precision Fit Sockets™ built into the frame, and a no-cut seat mast that offers the adjustability of a standard post. It’s exclusive technology that could only be made using Trek’s proprietary OCLV Carbon. And it’s technology exclusive to the Discovery Channel, giving them a distinct performance advantage others can only envy.

Unparalleled Drivetrain.

Nearly all other frame designs on the road are restricted by the need to stay within the industry standard 68mm bottom bracket shell width. Not so with the all-new Madone, which uses Net Molding carbon technology and Precision Fit Sockets to place the bottom bracket bearings directly in the frame itself. The result is the widest bottom bracket/down tube junction in the industry and a 48% increase in lateral down tube stiffness at the bottom bracket. Designed to accept most two-piece crank designs from Shimano, Bontrager, SRAM, FSA, and Campagnolo without affecting the q-factor, the integrated bottom bracket design saves 40 grams compared to traditional designs.

All The Strength Without The Weight.

With standard 1 1/8” steer tubes, fork designers are forced to create abrupt, 90° bends where the fork crown transitions to the steer tube. To compensate for these naturally weaker bends, forks must then be over-built for strength. This process adds weight. The all-new Madone’s fork is different. It uses an oversized E2 lower steer tube that, when combined with our No90™ construction method, effectively removes these typical bends by allowing the carbon fibers to run straighter and continuously through the entire fork. Thanks to E2’s larger diameter, No9D construction utilizes carbon’s inherent “straight-line” strength to create forks that are significantly lighter (up to 120g lighter) than previous Madone forks.

Focused On Comfort.

Traditional seatpost systems place the clamping mechanism at a very high stress point on the frame, requiring the seat tube to be overbuilt to withstand the rocking forces of the post. The all-new Madone’s seat mast design solves this problem by eliminating the post entirely and moving the clamping mechanism above the stress zone. This design not only achieves a 25% weight reduction compared to a standard carbon seatpost, but also allows the seat tube to flex in a more natural way, improving vertical compliance by 50% compared to last year’s Madone.

Centered On Performance.

The all-new Madone’s ControlCore is the center from which all performance starts. A two-part system made up of the seatstay/top tube junction and down tube/bottom bracket/chainstay cluster, ControlCore utilizes a size-specific seat lug/top tube section that gets larger in diameter and stiffness as frame size increases while creating a direct link from the top tube to the seatstay. ControlCore also combines the industries widest down tube/bottom bracket design with oversized asymmetric box section chain stays. ControlCore technology allows Trek engineers to tune lateral flex to provide outstanding steering and rear triangle precision.

Total Performance System.

Guided by a fuselage concept of integration without making compromises, the all-new Madone adopts a holistic approach to bicycle design. Previously disparate systems (seat post, bb, headset, fork) have been re-engineered to function seamlessly with the all-new Madone’s frame. The integrated headset, seat mast, integrated bottom bracket, and the E2r fork all contribute to a total fuselage system that performs better and weighs less. When compared to last year’s comparable Madone fuselage (i.e., with seat post, headset, and bb installed), this year’s Madone 6.9 fuselage is 210g* lighter than the SSL; the new Madone 5.5 fuselage is 250g* lighter than the ’07 Madone SL; and the ’08 Madone 5.1 fuselage is 315g* lighter than last year’s Madone fuselage.

*Due to variances between individual frames, all weight comparisons are based on an average of actual weight savings measured in a random sampling of fuselages.

Raced By The Team. Built For You.

Trek’s always been a firm believer in racing what we sell. Since partnering with the team, every bike they’ve ridden, every Trek used by Lance Armstrong during his historic run to seven consecutive TdF championships, has been available for purchase through Trek’s exclusive network of independent bicycle dealers. The same holds true for the all-new Madone. Available in five models—ranging from the Madone 5.1 to the flagship 6.9 raced by the team, and three fit options. Pro, Performance, and Women’s Specific Design(WSD). The same bike ridden by the team will soon be available at East Street Cycles. Call for delivery times.
